After rolling out of bed one morning, you realize something’s wrong with your mouth. You run to the bathroom and take a look in the mirror. Oh no – your veneer fell off! Your first instinct might be to panic, but don’t worry, these things happen. You’re not the first person to find yourself in this predicament, and you surely won’t be the last. But do you know what to do in this situation? Read on for a step-by-step on what you should do.

What Should I Do If My Veneer Fell Off?

Here’s what you should do if your veneer fell off:

PUT YOUR VENEER IN A CLOSED CONTAINER

Your dentist might be able to reattach the veneer, so keep it in a closed container to protect it while you wait for your appointment. If it’s broken, collect as many pieces as possible and place them all in the container.

CONTACT YOUR DENTIST

Now that you have the veneer in a safe place, contact your dentist as soon as possible to protect the newly exposed underlying tooth. They’ll provide you with instructions on what to do in the meantime. Make sure you follow their advice diligently!

USE A TEMPORARY SOLUTION

You should never try and resolve the situation on your own without consulting your dentist. If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity or enamel roughness, ask your dentist about dental wax on your exposed tooth. It can act as a barrier that protects the tooth and helps alleviate discomfort temporarily.

REPAIR OR REPLACE YOUR VENEER

If your veneer is in good condition, your dentist might be able to salvage and reattach it. Depending on the damage, it could be repaired with composite resin. But since this material isn’t as durable as porcelain, it might be best to simply order a replacement.

Why Do Veneers Fall Off?

Dental veneers are adhered to the front surfaces of your teeth using special cement. Since they’re meant to be replaced every few years, the adhesive is not permanently binding, meaning a veneer can fall off under certain circumstances. Here are a few reasons why your veneer may have detached:

It encountered an excessive amount of pressure. Because the special cement is not a permanent binder, your veneer can fall off if it encounters an excess of pressure.

  • It’s old. Veneers can easily last up to ten years. But as time goes on, the bonding weakens and can cause the veneer to come off earlier.
  • It wasn’t bonded properly. If you recently got your veneers and one keeps falling off, it could be because your dentist didn’t bond it properly. Consider seeing another dentist for a second opinion.
  • The underlying tooth is decayed. Your tooth must remain healthy for the veneer to stay on. If you’ve lost too much enamel, it may no longer be strong enough to support the veneer.
  • Negligence. Avoid treating your veneers harshly (chewing on hard things, grinding your teeth) as it’ll increase the chances of your veneer breaking or coming off.

Did your veneer fall off? Stay calm and follow the steps outlined above. And remember – proper dental care is the key to preventing these accidents!
